Implant Dentistry in Kingston
Dental implants are one of the best way to replace missing teeth. To best encourage a successful implant treatment, you should go to an oral surgeon for the placement of implant posts. Dr. Matthew Hilmi, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) at Mid-Hudson Oral and Maxillofacial Practice,PC has the advanced specialized skill set required to address the bone, skin, muscles, and nerves involved in complex placement cases. His education and training ensures you get the best possible results in your dental implant case.
What Do Implants Do?
As replacements for missing or extracted teeth, implants are permanent and aesthetic solutions. Unlike bridges or other alternatives, implants do not need “prepared” adjacent teeth to give you a new smile.
It takes several months to complete the implant process. First, the implant itself, the “post,” has to be inserted into the jawbone. A gum incision is made for secure placement. Depending on how many teeth require replacement, several implants may be added at once. The gums are sutured (stitched close) once all posts are added to the jaw.
The implant is given three to six months to heal. During this time, bone tissue from the jaw forms around the implants. This process is called osseointegration. Until that process is complete, your dentist might give you temporary crowns to wear. That way, you can eat, speak, and smile confidently throughout the healing phase.
After osseointegration is complete, the implant is ready for the abutment. The abutment is the base the new tooth relies on directly. An impression is taken after the addition of the abutment to help make your new restoration. Dr. Hilmi knows several general dentists who can create the new tooth quickly through on-site technology. After fabrication, the restoration is permanently cemented. It may take a little while, but implants feel like natural teeth once you get used to them.
The Dental Implant Advantage
Preserving healthy tooth structure and looking natural are all central reasons why dental implants are preferable to bridges. However, those are not the only benefits of implants.
- It is easier to speak and chew with implants because they do not slip out of place. They are permanently held in place.
- Unlike tooth-based dental bridges, most implants can last a lifetime with good care.
- Patients tend to feel more confident when their implant-supported smile does not move around, a common problem with dentures.
