Prior to placing an implant or denture device, the certain surgical preparation may need to be performed by Dr. Matthew Hilmi. The preparation of your mouth before the placement of a prosthesis is thus referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.
Some patients require minor oral surgical procedures, alveoloplasty or mucosal recontouring, prior receiving a partial or complete denture, in order to ensure the maximum level of fit, form, and function. A denture sits on the bone ridge (alveolar ridge), so it is very important that the bone is the proper shape and size for proper adaptation. For the best fit, form, and function of a denture, the bone might need to be recontoured. Occasionally, excess bone(exostosis) would need to be removed prior to denture delivery.
Common pre-prosthetic procedures:
- Bone smoothing and reshaping (Alveoloplasty)
- Removal of excess bone (exostosis)
- Removal of excess gum tissue (Gingivoplasty)
- Exposure/extraction of impacted teeth
